Furries at School, Part 1

Puerto Princesa, Philippines

Puerto Princesa is great for two reasons: proximity to the Underground River and fresh-water pearls. After a long day at the river with our new Filipino friends Sheila, Sam, Alan and Joana they took us to a local pearl market where we bought pearl earrings for (I kid you not), $0.75 a piece. Sheila showed us how to tell if they were real or not: bite them or scratch them on a hard surface. They were real.

After the market we went to a local "nice" restaurant and engorged on every Filipino dish available. Some famous Filipino dishes included Chicken Adobo, some fried "pig face" dish (that was actually pretty good), and TONS of fish (Grouper, Marlin, Snapper, etc.). Possibly my favorite dish was a spicy vegetable dish Gising-Gising (literally translates to "Wake Up, Wake Up.") San Miguel beer is from the Philippines (lots of people don't know that) and we drank our hearts out. For $0.50 a bottle how can you not? They even had "San Miguel Negra" which is rare even in the Philippines according to Sam, but it was like heaven in a bottle. Filipino food is super salty and the next morning we were all super swollen. But the grand total of our meal (and we made several comments about how we ordered WAY too much food for seven people) was about $7 a person. Assah!

Joan's Garden

Our co-teacher Joan had Helen, Chellcy and I over to her beautiful house for 물냉면 (Naengmyeon) last week. It was special for several reasons but maybe the most significant was that we were at a house in Seoul. This is almost unheard of as everyone here lives in apartment complexes. Her mother's garden and goldfish pond were beautiful and the cold noodle soup was delightful.

Korea vs. Argentina (대한민국 v. 아르헨티나.)

While Korea unfortunately took a beating last night 4-1 (even accidentally scoring one goal FOR Argentina!!!!), we had a great time with our co-workers at a Chicken and Beer hof.

World Cup is a HUGE deal here and Park Ji Sung (plays for Manchester United) is a GOD. We beat Greece and that was an awwwesome game. I went down to City Hall with about 30,000 other fans standing in the rain cheering on the Red Devils.

Everyone is really excited about Korea potentially moving to the next round. Hopefully Korea beats Nigeria next Tuesday...

The owner of our hagwon (school) and 3 others, took us all to Everland for an end of semester fun day. Then we went back to his awesome house for a incredible buffet dinner and hilarious drinking games.

Went to Everland with last Thursday - what a way to spend a school day! It was a perfect day for rollercoasters and the T-Express was maybe the best ride I've ever been on...
