I've made the acquaintance of some pretty talented musicians in the past few weeks. Seoul has a surprisingly more-than-decent rock scene which I am sad to have only now found. Here are a few of J.J., Nathan and Fred.

Jarasum International Jazz Festival

H and I made a trek out to the 7th Annual Jazzfest October 16 and 17. Heard some pretty great music (one of whom I highly recommend, the Michel Bisceglia Trio from Belgium for some easy, classical, Sunday afternoon jazz). While we had a rather unfortunate night's sleep in a jimjilbang, it was nice to get out of Seoul and see effort put in by Koreans for a real festival.

Kring, part deux

KRING

My hippest friend in Seoul (Mikey Harris) told us about a super secret open bar party/show at Kring, this incredible "art & culture space" in Gangnam. While we were promised Spank Rock and he was a no-show, we got to see awesome Korean party band Idiotape and N.A.S.A. (feat. Fatlip from Pharcyde fame). I got to talking to Fatlip aka. Derrick after the show and he invited us (like 7 of us!) back to his hotel. It turned out to be pretty much a bust as they were all jet-lagged, but it was a great night.

Global Gathering

I found out about Global Gathering the week I arrived in Korea. An electronic festival with not one but two of my favorite electronic bands when I was told I would see no decent live acts for a year!? You better believe I was excited. Clark, Scott and I went out Saturday night to Han River Nanji Park. The festival didn't fall short; we danced for eight straight hours to the incredible Underworld, MSTRKRFT, Royksopp and we even got a little K-POP action with 2ne1 and G-Dragon. While there were more non-Koreans than I ever hope to see in Korea again (a few who really lived up to the label "Ugly Americans" and Canadians, British, etc.) we met some cool people and had a blast.
